Choosing to take life easy and desiring greatness is paradoxical, because there is nothing good that comes easy in life. I used to think that it is my personal life experience that prompted this philosophy of life in me until I came across Jack Canfield book, The Success Principles and read how great men rose from nothing to prominence at different time in history and I decided that the absence of risk taking in our lives is suicidal on its own.

“I have insecurities. But whatever I’m insecure about I don’t dissect it, but I’ll go after it and say, “What am I afraid of?” I bet the average successful person can tell you they’ve failed so much more than they’ve had success. I’ve had far more failures than I’ve had success. With every commercial I’ve gotten, there were 200 I didn’t get. You have to go after what you’re afraid of.” Says Kevin Sorbo

Have you ever taken a decision in your life that scared you to death? If no, you have not started your journey to greatness. You can never be great in life, if you have never undertaken an endeavor bigger than you. Perhaps, one of the richest men in Africa today, Mike Adenuga Jnr. was tagged Nigeria number one comeback kid, the proverbial cat with nine lives. Why? Because against all odd, he bought oil blocks, while others were selling theirs to expatriates. Not minding the risk, he continued to explore it until he struck oil. He also applied twice for GSM license twice and lost with over $20million borrowed application fee. But he did not give up until he got back his license and started second largest telecommunication network in African, Global `Telecommunication Limited. He said that was the most trying moment of his life.

Confront your fears today and be successful. What are you afraid of doing? Is it approaching a lady for a date? Is it driving a car? Is it resigning your appointment and starting a new venture? Is it ability to say no? It is the same process. What you don’t confront will conquer you. Fear is in your imagination, expecting the worst as a result of your action or circumstances. It means False Experience Appearing Real. Deal with your fears.

Begin by expecting the best in every situation and adventures and your fears will dissipate. Mark Twain, celebrated American author and humorist said, “I have lived a long life and had many troubles, most of which never happened.”

In 2009, I took a decision that scared me to death, but I still head on into it, not minding the outcome. I wrote my letter of resignation from my appointment as the head of marketing and personal assistant to managing director of a Multi-billion Naira Real Estate development company to start my own outfit without savings in the bank, a two years old marriage and one year old son. I remembered writing on my facebook and twitter profiles that, “I am about to jump into the deep blue sea to swim with the sharks of this world.” Upon receiving my letter, my boss sent elderly people to me, so as to convince me to change my mind, when it didn’t work, he took me to a Chinese Restaurant on one on one discussion to change my decision, dangling juicy carrots, because I was resourceful to the company, but I insisted on leaving, with tears and disappointed we left the restaurant.

Guess what! My boss organized a valedictory party for me, gave me gifts and prayed for me. Have I died since then? No! Surprisingly, my boss decided to continue paying my salary, for six (6) months after I left and still supports me till today. I have been able to start my real estate consultancy outfit, author two (2) books, a created a weblog and start a boot camp for training generation next leaders and I am still counting.

Risk taking is an important ingredient for success, especially for those desiring to start a venture. No matter the resources at your disposal, level of preparation and knowledge, it will still involve risk, because you are not in business for yourself, you are in business for your customers or clients, which you cannot predict or control. What about government policies, economy situation and favorable environment for business. If all of these are right, what about your ability to successfully manage the business to greatness. The moment you decide to leave your comfort zone, and jump into muddy waters of business or life, it is a risk you are taking.

The funniest part of this is that the higher the amount of risk you are willing to take, the higher your expected success. “Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.”  Said Robert F. Kennedy, former attorney general and U.S. senator.

Are you still contemplating jumping off the cliff and taking the bull by the horn, facing your destiny head on? Don’t worry, you won’t die, even if you fall, you can always rise again. Failures are the people that fell and refused to stand up again. You can never know what you can do if you refuse to try. Let this be your resolve as you combat fear and risk in your endeavor, by saying, “Yes I can.” Take that giant leap and you will be surprised by what will happen. Remember, life without risk is more risky. If the mother eagle refuses to take the risk of throwing her baby off the cliff to enable him fly, the baby eagle will never be able to fly and would not become the strongest and greatest bird in the jungle.

Do you want to be great in life? Then jump.

“Living at risk is jumping off the cliff and building your wings on the way down”
