Recently, I was reading a book and certain information jumped at me from the book that shook my whole being. This information is a solution to what I’ve been looking for, for years, which came so simple and easy after a lot has been spent wastefully without result.

Also, I’ve been attending training back to back for a month now both online and offline, things I’ve learnt so far made me concluded that I know very little.

These revelations made it dawned on me how costly ignorance could be. That is why a wise man said, “If you think education is expensive, try ignorance.” If education or getting information is expensive, I don’t know what I will use to qualify the cost of ignorance, luxury is an understatement.

So many people are in the grave, mortuary, crippled, blind, amputated, failed, sick, poor, over weight and backward today, not because they are unlucky or cursed or came from less privileged background, but because they or their parents or guardians or their government did not know what to do or where to go when situations of life came calling. That is why we will continue to hear a regret statement like, “How I wish I knew”, which means, this wouldn’t have happened if I knew what to do at that time.

This kind of statement always come after life has been lost, property worth millions had collapsed or razed down by fire, business worth billions had bankrupt or someone had been jailed.

Wikipedia explain ignorance as “a state of being uninformed (lack of knowledge) or an adjective describing a person in the state of being unaware and is often used as an insult to describe individuals who deliberately ignore or disregard important information or facts.”

The painful aspect of this is the legal aspect of it that says “ignorance of the law is no excuse”, that is, ignorantia juris non excusat, which literally stands for the proposition that the law applies also to those who are unaware of it.

Ignorance is from the word ignore, which means to overlook, disregard, refuse to pay attention or take no notice of. This made me realize that we are ignorant by decision and not by mistake, it is a deliberate occurrence. If you are suffering as a result of ignorant today, please note that it is your fault.

What are you ignoring today?

Many things if you ask me. The more you think you know, the more you find out you don’t know, that is the principle of life. It takes deliberate attempt and humility to learn and fight ignorance. Where you ended your education is where another person starts.

Many graduates stopped learning the day they graduated from the university, it is a pity, because life is progressive, yesterday theory cannot solve today’s problems and challenges, that is why the military and progressive organizations don’t play with training and re-training of their personnel, courses every now and then. Times and situations are changing, life pattern are changing, music are changing, advertisement are changing, in fact, everything is changing, the only constant thing is change itself and the only remedy for change is knowledge. The dinosaurs fossilized and became extinct because they refused to change with time.

Don’t be outdated, seek information and save yourself and your generation yet unborn from unbearable cost tag on ignorance.

Reading as an antidote to ignorance

There are many mediums through which ignorance can be stopped or minimized, but the one I want to quickly share about is reading. It is one of the easiest and cheapest means of acquiring knowledge and it is also very potent. It is said that “the day you stop reading, you start dying” and “readers are leaders”, which means reading is the secret for good living and success.

There are many books being published and released into the market everyday, begging for readership, “no knowledge” they say “is a waste.” There is no book that is not good, even when you read a nonsense, stupid and foolish book, at least you will learn how not to be foolish. Cure your ignorance today, buy a book and begin to read it! The wisest man that ever lived, Solomon advised us to, “Buy the truth and sell it not”, Jesus told his disciples “You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free”, they were talking about the importance of acquiring and getting information. Joshua too was being instructed by God to cherish and value His book, “Let this book of the law be ever on your lips and in your thoughts day and night, so that you may keep with care everything in it; then a blessing will be on all your way, and you will do well.” Joshua 1:8 (BBE).

I  Tomiwa Ogunremi, is telling you today, “go and discover the treasure hidden in the dark place within books”. It is a secret! Don’t be ignorant of it.
